OPEN-GRP Early-Career Research Fellowship

January 10, 2024

The Gulf Research Program’s Early-Career Research Fellowship supports emerging scientific leaders as they take risks on research ideas not yet tested, pursue unique collaborations, and build a network of colleagues who share their interest in improving offshore energy system safety and the well-being of coastal communities and ecosystems.

The Early Career Research Fellowship’s Human Health and Community Resilience track aligns with one of Gulf Research Program’s five program areas, and narrows the focus of the fellowship to support the most relevant research to the goals and objectives of the Board on Gulf Health and Resilience.

For the 2024-2026 Application Cycle, the Human Health and Community Resilience track goal focuses on contributing to the understanding of the role that resilience-based interventions* play in addressing the root causes of climate, disaster, and/or health vulnerability that are associated with health disparities** in communities throughout the Gulf of Mexico region.

For more information on eligibility, review criteria and how to apply, visit our For Applicants page.

The Human Health and Community Resilience Track will open concurrently with Offshore Energy Safety Track.

The RESTORE Act Center of Excellence for Louisiana (LA-COE) released a third Request for Proposals (RFP3) and is encouraging coastal researchers, both student and professional, to apply for this competitive grant money. There is up to $4.2 million available under this opportunity. Projects submitted for these two-year awards must support research that is directly related to the implementation of Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, which guides the state’s coastal restoration and protection work. The funding comes from settlements of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Funding for the LA-COE flows through the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.

The funding will be awarded in two categories:

- Graduate Assistantships: These awards will only be made available to support full-time graduate students conducting relevant research at Louisiana colleges or universities.
- Research Awards: Any Louisiana organization or institution may be the lead on a proposal and participate in the proposed research. In the case of proposals involving multiple organizations, a single Louisiana-based organization must be identified as the lead.

Amount: $4.2 million

Length of Awards: 2 years or less

Expected Number of Awards: TBD
