StoryMap: Marine Mammals in the Gulf of Mexico

The NOAA RESTORE Science Program supports research on marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico. Study areas of several projects are mapped above.

Marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico are still being impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as well as other threats. Though researchers and natural resource managers are challenged by a lack of data about the 21 marine mammal species that live in the region, they are making sure to leverage partnerships and communicate their findings to help inform each other’s research. Each study becomes a piece of the increasingly complex puzzle of marine mammal conservation in the Gulf.
